July 2021 Spotlight of the Month

Oldest, for profit, business started in Canton that is still in existence!

Canton Main Street is pleased to announce MidAmerica National Bank as the July Spotlight of the Month. MidAmerica National Bank located at 100 West Elm Street is the oldest, for profit, business which started in Canton and that is still in existence.

MidAmerica National Bank came into existence in 1933, after three existing banks in Canton were closed following the stock market crash of 1929 and the National Bank Moratorium of 1933. The National Bank of Canton was chartered and opened for business on November 28, 1933 with a force or nine employees and seven Board of Directors. During those first days, long lines crowded the teller windows forcing the employees to work past midnight, calculating the business of the day, and creating employment opportunities for additional staff. During the first opening days of the bank, deposits outnumbered withdrawals ten-to-one and total resources totaled $770,432. Until 1969, The National Bank of Canton occupied the building located at 2 East Elm Street until a new facility was constructed at 100 West Elm Street. The National Bank of Canton name was changed to MidAmerica National Bank on January 20, 1998.

MidAmerica National Bank’s roots are evident in its ownership, represented by approximately 410 shareholders who primarily live in, or have ties to, Canton and Fulton County. MidAmerica National Bank is committed to the vision of being an independent bank, so individual shareholders may own no more than five percent of the bank. This ensures that vision is upheld.

Like many large banks, MidAmerica National Bank offers a wide range of banking products and services, but focus on a personalized and relationship-based banking approach. They strive to be an asset to the people and communities they serve and try to get to know their customer’s needs in order to offer the best banking solutions and customer service experience. Their diverse portfolio of products includes commercial, ag, mortgage, and personal loans where decisions are made at the local level; low and no fee deposit accounts; professional and reliable investment products; a qualified and cohesive Wealth Management Group that includes tax and estate planning; and the latest in banking technologies. Their vast banking portfolio of products holds true to their motto, “We are large enough when you need us, but small enough when it matters most.”

Over the years, the MidAmerica National Bank family has expanded to include offices in Cuba, Henry, Lewistown, and Macomb. Today, MidAmerica National bank employs over 120 people to help serve their customers located in and around the five communities where their offices are now located. With this growing customer base, the MidAmerica National Bank Board of Directors recognized the need for a new and larger home office. In 2018 the board approved construction of a modern, two-story building that better fits MidAmerica National Bank today and for many years to come. On January 19, 2021 the new building was completed and moved into which remains at 100 West Elm Street.

MidAmerica National Bank genuinely cares about economic development and how well their communities are doing. They believe small businesses and entrepreneurs are at the heart of every community. MidAmerica National Bank supports not only those businesses individually, but also the non-profit organizations, like Canton Main Street, who support our downtown and business community. They are also a true community bank and take their role of participating in and investing in local communities very seriously. From financial support, employee volunteerism, community projects, organizations, and decisions that shape our communities; MidAmerica National Bank takes an active role and their employees not only work in the communities they serve but also live locally and get involved in those communities. They believe it is not enough to be just a bank located in the community but being an integral part of what makes that community great.

In honor of their new building located at 100 West Elm Street in Canton, MidAmerica National Bank would like to invite the entire community to their week-long Grand Opening Celebration.
