City Treasurer

The City Treasurer’s office mission is to be financially transparent to the City of Canton’s residents and to professionally administer and accurately report all financial transactions in accordance with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Government Account and Auditing Standards, federal and state laws and regulations and City Ordinances and policies. The office is responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, general accounting operations, accounts receivable, accounts payable, utility billing, customer collections and service, fixed assets, debt management, investment of the City’s funds, management of the City’s information systems and the administration of the internal control structure.

Duties of the Treasurer and Comptroller
Treasurer

The Treasurer is elected every four years at the same time as the Mayor and City Clerk. The duties of the Treasurer are to receive all money and collection of special taxes, Hotel/Motel Tax, and Motor Fuel Tax. They shall keep an accurate register of all warrants paid and from which funds warrants were paid from. They are the custodian of all City of Canton and Fire & Police Pension Funds. In conjunction with the Comptroller and Mayor, they are responsible for publishing the Annual Treasurer’s Report, listing yearly receipts and disbursements, and facilitation of Annual Audits and reporting.

Comptroller

The Comptroller is an outsourced position on a contractual basis through selection from the Mayor and City Council. Their duties are laid out under the general direction of the Mayor and City Council and they establish account systems to provide maximum control over all city financial transactions. The Comptroller oversees and assist in the balancing and reconciliations of all City accounts as prepared by the City Treasurer, and also assists in preparation of the annual budget, including revenue estimates, preparation of budget instructions, estimate forms and time schedules.
