City awarded with IEPA loan to fund second phase
Lead Water Service Line Replacement
The City of Canton wishes to announce that the second phase of Lead Service Line Replacement has been approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
In 2023, the City was able to replace 201 lead water service lines with the use of an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Public Water Supply Loan. The $1,689,475.01 IEPA loan was entirely forgiven and resulted in no cost to our water customers for construction related costs. The City Has now obtained a second IEPA loan in the amount of $2,164,701.83 to replace an additional 296 lead service lines. Construction is anticipated to begin in June, 2025. This IEPA loan will again be entirely forgiven and will cover all construction related costs.
For assistance in identifying your service line material, please contact the City of Canton Water Billing Department at 309-647-0288. Properties with lead services will be noted for a third phase of Lead Service Line Removal, for which a third IEPA loan is being applied for.
Water Quality
The City of Canton is required by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to conduct various constituent samplings of our raw and finished water. The City submits reports on this testing on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis to the IEPA for review and compliance with water quality standards.
Each year, the IEPA requires public water supplies serving over 25 residents to post water quality data in the form of a “Consumer Confidence Report”. The link to the 2024 Consumer Confidence Report will be included with the April/May utility bill supplied to Canton water customers and satellite community officials. The following site can be visited to learn more about Consumer Confidence Reports: https://epa.illinois.gov/topics/compliance-enforcement/drinking-water/consumer-confidence-reports.html
